Last week of readings.
I really like reading The Young Reader and the Screen. I could actually understand it, well most of it. I loved the part that said that when children are reading information from the screen that they will most likely have trouble trying to understand the content because of the way the text is presented. I also agree with what they said about how using a CD-ROM is completely different from using a book. When a child is reading a book or using a book they can look through the pages and pictures and can go back to them easily if they need to. The book remains the same and will always be there in a physical sense no matter what page you are reading or what picture you are looking at. But on the computer information comes and goes with the touch of a mouse and isn't always there when you want it to be. I hate having to print off information from the computer but I always have to in order to read it. I cannot fully understand the information or read it properly if it is on the screen, I need it in print in front of me. That is why I think it is important for children to not becomes so focused on using the computer to get information. Project Gutenberg is a site where you can get free e-books.

Jason's article and Tuxpaint
First of all I did not understand Jason's article. I was very well written and there was so many different terms that I did not understand in the article. I had to really read it carefully in order to understand a little bit of it, and even then it wasn't that much. I thought it was great that GNU's are designed to allow people to have the freedom to share and exchange software. I think this will allow people who don't have the money or resources to get the software that they need. It was interesting to read that hackers were the first community on the internet and that many of the members were programmers who hacked the internet together. I didn't know that and that gives me a new perspective on what hackers are and what they do. I also liked that it said that hackers are not destroyers but they are creators, and travelers etc. I also found interesting the part in the article that talked about the internet and how you need to know the english language in order to use the internet.

I really liked this site I thought the paintings were really cool and I love that children can use the computer to do their artwork. Some teachers may not like this idea because they like to see the "paper" work or the product of children's work. I think it is great that children can use the computer to express themselves artistically. The different drawing tools were so neat, they are just like items children can use when they are doing art that is not on the computer. I also liked how parts of the program are in so many different languagues. This is very important because diversity is becoming even more of an issue these days.

Iain Stewart (2002) Children as Photographers (http://www.apug.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3812)

I thought this article was very interesting. I want to go out and give children cameras now and see what they take pictures of and do some research of my own. I never thought about giving a child a camera because I thought that they would break it and then it would be a big expense. But now I will do it because there are so many interesting things that you can find out about children who take pictures. I thought it was interesting that 11 yr olds were more likely to take outside photographs in a natural setting and their pictures didn't have people in them as much. But 4 yrs later 15 yr olds were taking pictures of their friends and that seemed to be most important to them. It makes sense to me that 15 yr olds took pictures for social purposes because I remember taking pictures of my friends and I when we went out to movies and did things together. I think that I started doing that because I wanted memories to look back on of the things we did together and even though we aren't friends now I still look at them.

Children as Photographers (http://www.cap.ac.uk/)

I thought this website was very cool. I think that we should get a website like this and use it in Canada. I liked how you could look at pictures according to different categories. I went into the gender category and I noticed a difference between what pictures females and male children took. Females tended to take more pictures that included more people from what I saw and males took more pictures of scenery. I also looked at what children took pictures of at different ages. I noticed that the eleven yr olds took more pictures of scenery and that 15 yr olds took more pictures of people but there still were not that many pictures of people there was still a lot of scenary that was in the pictures. It would be interesting to see pictures that people took in Canada rather than in countries in Europe but it was still very interesting to look at.

Access Grid Week of November 7th 2005
I thought that using this was really cool and I liked how it was so life like on the screen. Just the thought of communicating with someone that way is really interesting. It is too bad that the whole process is so costly because it would be great to have in child care centres and other places where children can interact with the equipment. The one thing I didn't like was that Kenny could see me it make me a little uncomfortable and I felt like I was just sitting there and I didn't want to do anything stupid. But I don't really like being on camera and I think it would be completely different with children because they like to be on television and on video. I also thought it was kind of annoying that the movements on the screen were a little "jerky" they weren't smooth movements and that was starting to bother my eyes after sitting there for awhile. Also, you had to talk really loud in order for the person to hear what you were saying which was also frustrating. I would love to see how this would work with children. Our class didn't interact that much and I think watching children using that screen would be completely different and very interactive. I am also wondering if you can damage those screens because if you can that wouldn't be good because children are so close to the screen that they could take something and ruin the screen or even just touching the screen?? I don't know just something I was thinking about.

November 2nd, 2005 Readings
The article that talked about the New Visualization Lab was very interesting. This technology allows people to communicate from areas all over the world and pretty much in person. The people on the screen are very life like. You can see what they are doing and can tell what their body language is. This is a very personal way of talking to someone as opposed to using msn or another chat site. Usually when you are using technology to talk to someone you can't see them very well but this allows you to actually talk to the person and see what they are doing clearly as well which I think allows you to better communicate with someone. On msn there are always a lot of misunderstandings because you are just talking over a computer and you can't see the person or tell their body language but using this lab you will be able to see that.

The article about children taking pictures of different things was so interesting. Looking at what the children took pictures of and why was very interesting. I think that teacher's could use this as an evaluation tool in understanding certain aspects of a child's development. Also a teacher would be able to look at the pictures and see what the child was interested in and would be able to plan activities that the children enjoy. I liked how the reseachers looked at different countries to see what pictures children took. I thought there might be some cultural differences in what children took pictures of but there wasn't. I thought that younger children would take pictures of their toys and house etc because that is what they know and what is important to them.

In this article it stated that the children only went outside once a day. Children should be going outside at least 2 times a day. Children need more exercise and room to run around they should not be cooped up in a room all day long. Having the medical records on the computer is a great idea just as long as you back up your information so you don't lose it. But having them on the computer is much better than having them just on paper on file because you can easily access them on the computer and send them to the parents or whoever needed them. I was glad that security was a priority in the daycare because it is important to have this for the safety of all of the children and staff. This puts parents minds at ease knowing the their children are safe and that a security system is in place.

Seductions of Sim

This article discusses the pros and cons of using Sims. The pros are that children can create their own cities etc and use their imaginations to create something that only they made. This will increase a child's self esteem because they can do this on their own and be successful in it. The children use various skills such as critical thinking and problem solving skills to play the game which are important skills to build and have in the future. I think that children should limit their use of this game because otherwise they will rely on computers to solve their problems and develop their skills. Children learn best through hands on activities that they can manipulate.

Open Source Household

My opinion about this article is that children who use computers too often will not have a life other than using and being around a computer. I think that children should understand how to use the basics of a computer and use the computer to a certain extent. I personally would not want my children using a computer that much because I would want them to experience things in real life not just through a computer. Also, I would want my children to be physically active and healthy and not just sit in front of a computer all day long.

Media Family

Children that are addicted to video games, WHAT???????!!!! That is just ridiculous. I can't believe that children would get to the point where they are addicted. That is exactly why you need to LIMIT their time use on the computer and DO NOT allow them to have a computer in their room. Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing because if they were aware then maybe this problem could be stopped. I never knew that there was actually a site about video game addiction, CRAZY! Parents need to be more strict with their children and tell them to get off the computer when they see that they are using it too much.

Hacking Human....Article
I read the article Hacking Human: Data-Archaeology and Surveillance in Social Networks. This article scared me. Even when we have has discussions about people hacking into your computer and finding all kinds of things and knowing everything you do I was very uneasy when we were talking about that. I do not want to even put pictures out on my computer now because I don't want people seeing them. It's funny because I never thought about it this much. Now that we have been talking about it I come to realize even more that you should be careful of what you are doing on the internet and what you are typing/posting. I did not realize that hacking wasn't a new thing that it dated back into the 1950's I thought it was something that people just recently started doing. When I read the part about plugging in someone's name into Google and how it reveals a lot of information about the person I immediately went to Google and put my name into the search bar and nothing that I saw was about me but that is crazy!!!! I don't ever want to read about stuff on the internet about me, it's just too weird and unsafe.

Week 5 Readings
I read YOUTH ACCESS TO THE INTERNET THROUGH LIBRARIES INTRODUCTIONS. This article seems to be a vaild article about limiting children's library use. It states that the internet is a good thing for children to use which is true. Although children can also access things on the internet that they should not be looking at. It is a good thing that librarians are limiting time use on the internet because that way children won't have time to look at so many things on the internet. Also, I think that letting parents know about the inappropriate things that children can find on the internet is useful so the parents are aware of what is going on. I have no idea if this research is any good because it is just from some random site and anyone could of written it.

The second article was Center for Children and Technolgy: Various Reports. The article has 4 areas evaulate, consult, research, and develop. That article I read was Promoting Assets and Access: Reframing the Standards to Include All Students. This article talked about how students with disabilities can be included in standards based education. I think this information was vaild because there was correct, intellectual based information in this article. Although I still don't really have any idea if this is the best information or not.

I forgot to comment on this movie. I have never seen the movie before and I didn't get to see the end of it but from what I did see technology was a major focus in this movie. It showed good aspects of technology and bad aspects of it. For example, tracking devices were used by Edna to keep track of all of her children. All parents want to make sure that their children are safe at all times and that is why some parents feel it is necessary to watch their children on webcams to see if everything is okay. But what if those tracking devices or webcams didn't work then you wouldn't know for that period of time what was going on. That is why you should not rely on them because if they fail then you won't know what to do.

Webcam in a Danish Day Nursery and Drowning Child Responses
When I become a mother I am not sure if I would want to watch my child(ren) on a webcam because I know that if I was a teacher I would feel uncomfortable knowing that my every move is being watched. I'm sure that after awhile I would get used to it and I wouldn't even notice that the cams were there but I don't know if I could get past the inital feelings of uneasiness. I think that you should have researched and went to the daycare to observe to see if that daycare was appropriate for your children to attend and if you did that you shouldn't feel the need to watch your children on a cam during the day. I agree with what was said in the article about how webcams can have negative results. If you are watching your children that much on a webcam you are most likely going to see something that you don't want to see or that you feel is inappropriate. When this happens it causes conflict between the teacher and the parent and if the parent wasn't watching at the time they might not have seen what had happened. I agree with what the article said when it was mentioned that parents want to see that their values match the values of the daycare. Of course you want to know that your child is in the best of care and that they are being cared for in the same way that you the parent would care for them but at the same time everyone is different and you can't expect that. The article talked about having a feeling of presence of being there with your child as you watch them on webcam even though you are miles away. Yes, that is a comforting feeling and to watch for a bit is a good thing but to constantly watch all day is something that I don't agree with because that is when you see things that you don't want to see.

The other article about saving the drowning child I thought was so amazing. I think that if everyone had that kind of money to install those cameras it should be done. Just the fact that that little girl would of died if those cameras weren't there is a scary thing to think about. This is a type of technology that is so crazy to think about because it is so complicated and can actually detect inconsistencies in swimmers' movements. But at the same time I'm thinking that what if those cameras for some reason didn't work and the life guards were counting on them to detect things and all of a sudden it didn't work. Just goes to show once again that technology has positive and negative aspects.

I think that weblogs are a good way to become part of a bigger social community where you can share your ideas and thoughts with others. I also think it is a good thing to use because if you were having a problem with school or even in your life you can get advice and opinions from many people at the same time. I somewhat agree with using e-portfolios. I think that using them is a good way to display your work and to get any feedback that you might need to improve your portfolio. But on the other hand I would not want everyone knowing about my personal life and what I have included in my portfolio. I do not think that field trips should be substituted using weblogs. Children need to be able to actually get out of the classroom and see different things in the world and experience them "hands on". I think it is important for children to go on trips and experience things with their classmates and teachers not just through the computer. There is only so much that can be learned and experienced using weblogs but when you are actually at the site and exploring things you can better understand those experiences. I do think that once they come back from their experience they should write about it in the weblog and share their opinion with their other classmates.

First Article- Turkle Computers
I thought this article was very interesting and what it said was very true. In the article when people were using MUDS to give themselves another identity so to speak is exactly the same as using msn and chat sites. You can say whatever you want and you don't have to worry about the other persons response or how that person is going to react. You can pretend that you are another person and no one will know it is a very tricky way to manipulate the person that you are talking to. When you are using MUDS you can escape from your real life and make a new one up. It's almost as if you are using it as a way to destress from what occurs in your everyday life. With regards to Merlin I feel that this game would be very frustrating for children because they never know when they are going to win or lose. Sometimes the computer would win and then other times when the child thinks that he or she is going to win the computer does. I feel that children need things that are somewhat predictable so that they can feel confident in what they are doing. Computers can be a good thing for children and they can also be very frustrating and can lower the child's self esteem. Computer games should be chosen carefully. Yet again I found this article to be very confusing too much computer jargon ...:)

Cyborg Babies and Cy-Dough Plasm Article Response
Cyborg Babies and Cy-Dough-Plasm Article

What I learned from this article is just how complicated and complex technology is. In order to truly understand technology you must really use all aspects of critical thinking and be able to analyze the different aspects of technology. Even for children to understand and be able to use a computer they must "play" around with it and just try to figure things out as they happen while using the computer. Also, sometimes computers can become very frustrating for children because some children don't understand why they don't work and why they might not succeed at games that they have succeeded in before, and that is because computers are so unpredictable at times you never know what might happen while using a computer. I think that the "Sims" games are good games for children to use because they allow children to use their creativity to make up different aspects of the game. Some of the games allow children to make up their own world or what they would want their life to be like which to some people can be a good or bad thing. I had to read this article two times in order to be able to understand the very little that I did and even still I don't fully understand it and that is exactly what technology is all about.... CONFUSING :)
